Children With Special Needs
Under the Co-ordinated Access for Child Care initiative, parents seeking a child care placement for their child with special needs are encouraged to contact the Integration Resources HUB for support in identifying the appropriate program. The services of HUB include: co-ordinated intake and placement; equipment and toys; staff support; training; speech therapy; social work; behavioural consultation and parenting programs.
Most programs welcome children with special needs. Some programs have the support of a trained resource teacher who has an Early Childhood Education diploma or equivalent qualification. In addition, these teachers have a post-graduate certificate which qualifies them to specialize in working with children with special needs, their parents and other staff in the child care program or in the community.
The programs listed on this page exist to assist children with special needs and their families. Special needs may include physical disabilities, emotional, behavioural, hearing, vision, speech and language or a combination of challenges. Referrals often come from professionals in the community although self-referral is possible in some cases. Programs may take place in the child's home, the child care program or in a community program.
